Pore Accessibility in Amorphous Solid Water

چکیده
Abstract The porous nature of amorphous solid water (ASW) can significantly effect the chemical evolution any planetary or astrophysical surface it forms on due to its ability trap and retain volatiles. amount volatiles that enter an ASW grain mantle is limited by how interconnected pores are each other exterior surface. Previous laboratory studies examined interconnectivity in thin films relevant ice mantles interstellar grains. Here, we investigate what extent subsequent gas absorption properties change as one moves toward thicker samples (up ∼10 19 H 2 O cm −2 ∼4 μ m) more representative icy material found outer solar system. We find for all film thicknesses studied, internal accessible from sample’s surface, needed fill increases linearly with column density. This linear relation supports will persist ices much than those were able study, suggesting contaminant trapped within alter a variety ASW-rich surfaces

متن کاملCompaction of microporous amorphous solid water by ion irradiation.
We have studied the compaction of vapor-deposited amorphous solid water by energetic ions at 40 K. The porosity was characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and methane adsorption/desorption. These three techniques provide different and complementary views of the structural changes in ice resulting from irradiation. We find that the decrease in internal surface ...
متن کاملLow energy charged particles interacting with amorphous solid water layers.
The interaction of charged particles with condensed water films has been studied extensively in recent years due to its importance in biological systems, ecology as well as interstellar processes. We have studied low energy electrons (3-25 eV) and positive argon ions (55 eV) charging effects on amorphous solid water (ASW) and ice films, 120-1080 ML thick, deposited on ruthenium single crystal u...
متن کاملPhase diagram of amorphous solid water: low-density, high-density, and very-high-density amorphous ices.
We calculate the phase diagram of amorphous solid water by performing molecular dynamics simulations using the extended simple point charge (SPC/E) model. Our simulations follow different paths in the phase diagram: isothermal compression/decompression, isochoric cooling/heating, and isobaric cooling/heating. We are able to identify low-density amorphous (LDA), high-density amorphous (HDA), and...
متن کاملA desorption mechanism of water following vacuum-ultraviolet irradiation on amorphous solid water at 90 K.
Following 157 nm photoexcitation of amorphous solid water and polycrystalline water ice, photodesorbed water molecules (H(2)O and D(2)O), in the ground vibrational state, have been observed using resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization detection methods. Time-of-flight and rotationally resolved spectra of the photodesorbed water molecules were measured, and the kinetic and internal energy dis...
